What
is a doula and what does she do?
A birth doula is someone who provides emotional, physical, and
informational support to the birth couple before, during, and after
the birth of their baby. The birth doula can help the birth couple
develop a birth plan, encourage them to “own” their birth
experience through education, and can help them to achieve the
birth they desire. She can help the mom process any negative
feelings she has about birth or a previous birth experience. She is
an active helper with relaxation, breathing, physical support and
emotional encouragement during the labor and delivery. One of her
roles is to help the mom through difficult times in labor by using
various comfort measures, which often eliminate the need for
pain-relieving drugs. The doula can be an advocate for the couple
to keep everyone sensitive to the couple’s birth plan. She does not
make decisions for the couple, but gives them evidence-based
information so they can make the best decision for themselves. Many
dads aren’t comfortable taking on the sole responsibility of
supporting their wives through labor, but the doula, especially one
who’s been through the birth experience, may be able to empathize
with the mom in a way a husband can’t, and help him to support his
wife in a more effective way.
Whether you use a midwife or obstetrician, all couples can benefit from hiring a birth doula. If you are looking for a birth doula (labor doula) in Berthoud, Campion, Erie, Firestone, Ft. Collins, Frederick, Johnstown, Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville, and Loveland, please Contact Me.
Here are some of the statistical benefits of using a doula:
• Reduction in C-sections
• Shorter labors
• Reduction in use of Pitocin
• Reduction in use of epidurals
• Reduction in use of narcotics
• Reduction in use of forceps
The doula often helps with
initial breastfeeding, which can get the new mom off to a good
start. And if she had an unmedicated birth, her baby is more
alert and better able to participate in breastfeeding. Studies show
that labor drugs, including epidurals, can affect a baby’s
alertness for days to weeks after the birth. Also, if the mom
experienced an unmedicated birth, she feels better physically, and
recovers more quickly. There are also fewer incidences of
postpartum depression, often because the mom was more satisfied
with her birth experience.
